The Army Nurse Corps capped Black nurses at 56 in 1941 and 160 in 1943, then dropped the quota in 1944 under political pressure. When the war ended in September 1945, 479 Black nurses were serving in a corps of about 50,000.

KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' highest resolution scan of the original Signal Corps photo (111-SC-192605-S). It's printed edge to edge on ultra premium luster photo paper, a popular choice for fine photographic prints. Luster has a finish between gloss and matte and takes a heavy layer of ink, so the tones come out rich and deep.

The story behind this photo: read the full history in the KNOWOL library, with the sources for every fact.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2219/9779/files/knowol-army-nurses-greenock-scotland-1944-vintage-photo-1_fa28dcda-a5da-4f95-8a3c-d25707077bfa.jpg?v=1792513389
