Seen from low on the ground, a huge rough boulder rides on a riveted steel crawler wagon under a cloudy sky, and a Seabee in a cap stands beside the tracks.

About This Historic Photo

The Navy's caption reads: "Giant seawall under construction by Seabees of the 76th Construction Battalion at Apra Harbor, Guam. When completed the two mile breakwater will contain 1, 760, 000 cubic yards of earth and stone. A 30-ton boulder is hauled to dumping spot." The wall is now called the Glass Breakwater, after Captain Henry Glass, who took Guam for the United States in 1898. It still shelters Apra Harbor, where the Port of Guam handles more than 90 percent of the island's civilian cargo.

KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' scan of the original U.S. Navy negative (80-G-413414). It's a square print, printed edge to edge on ultra premium luster photo paper, a popular choice for fine photographic prints. Luster has a finish between gloss and matte and takes a heavy layer of ink, so the tones come out rich and deep.

The story behind this photo: read the full history in the KNOWOL library, with the sources for every fact.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2219/9779/files/knowol-seabees-boulder-guam-seawall-vintage-photo-1.jpg?v=1792696838
