Our Research Process

Every KNOWOL print begins with research. We search through both well-known and overlooked collections to find historically significant works worth preserving and sharing. Some pieces come from major public institutions such as the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, historical societies, university archives, local libraries, and public-domain collections around the world. Others come from sources such as estate sales, donations, and people just like you.

Over the years, KNOWOL has discovered and restored many historic maps and images that are difficult to find elsewhere, including pieces that are being reproduced as prints for the first time in modern form.

Before restoration begins, we investigate each piece’s origin, historical context, location, subject matter, and significance. Our goal is to present every image accurately while helping customers understand why it matters.

Our Restoration Process

After a piece has been researched, we begin the restoration process. Historical images often arrive faded, damaged, stained, torn, poorly scanned, unevenly colored, or difficult to read. Our job is to make the original work clear and beautiful again without erasing the character that makes it authentic.

Using modern restoration tools, careful hand-editing, and years of experience working with archival imagery, we enhance clarity, repair visible damage, improve contrast, correct age-related fading, and prepare each piece for high-quality printing.
