Abandoned Greek Revival Mansion in Iberville Parish, LA 1857
This vintage photograph captures an abandoned Greek Revival mansion located in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, near White Castle. Built in 1857 by John Andrews, this estate features 75 rooms and showcases architectural elements such as grand columns, parapets, and porticoes. The mansion was later sold to Stone Ware, and the Ware family occupied it until around 1913.
The image, part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, documents the structural details and historical significance of this once-majestic building, now in a ruinous condition. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the areas architectural heritage and the passage of time that has led to the deterioration of such grand estates.
Frances Benjamin Johnston, the photographer, contributed significantly to documenting American architecture through her work, and this photograph is included in the 2013 ebook Great Photographs from the Library of Congress. The image reflects a rich history and offers insight into the architectural styles of the antebellum South.
