Built in 1823, the structure was commissioned by President James Monroe, with Thomas Jefferson supervising its construction and Capt. James Hoban serving as the architect. The first notable guest of this dwelling was Marquis de Lafayette, highlighting its importance in early American history.
In 1850, Colonel Fairfax acquired the property from the Monroe estate, further embedding it in the regions heritage. The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a project dedicated to documenting the architectural history of the southern United States.
