The building, completed in 1823, was commissioned by President James Monroe, with Thomas Jefferson overseeing its construction, and designed by architect James Hoban. Notably, the first guest to stay at this distinguished residence was the Marquis de Lafayette.

In 1850, the property was acquired by Colonel Fairfax from the Monroe estate, further embedding it into the rich tapestry of Virginias history.
