This vintage photograph captures a historic plantation in McClellanville, Charleston County, South Carolina, dating back to 1797. The structure, characterized by its grand columns and distinctive porticoes, was never occupied until 1858 due to unforeseen circumstances affecting its heirs. In 1858, Stephen D. Doar acquired the property, which remained in the Doar family for three generations. The plantation stands as a testament to the architectural style of the era, surrounded by the iconic Spanish moss that drapes the trees of the Lowcountry.

The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a project dedicated to documenting significant buildings in the region. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a noted photographer, captured this historic site as part of her inventory. The photograph was later published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys Plantations of the Carolina Low Country in 1938, further cementing its place in the rich narrative of Southern architecture.
