This vintage image captures the home of Jack Whinery in Pie Town, New Mexico. Built in May 1940, the dugout house cost thirty cents for nails and took ten days to complete. Additional sleeping rooms were added later. Mrs. Whinery constructed the fence after her husband cut the slats, showcasing early settlers resourcefulness.
