The building, known as Old Hall, was originally constructed in 1691 by Thomas Brown, the father of Sarah Brown who married Arthur Upshur II. Over the years, the property has remained in the hands of the Upshur family. The current iteration of the house, built between 1806 and 1808, showcases master craftsmanship, featuring intricate hand-carved woodwork created by builders and apprentices who resided on-site during its construction.

The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a project aimed at documenting the region’s architectural heritage.
