This vintage photograph captures a plantation structure located in McClellanville, Charleston County, South Carolina, reflecting the architectural style of the late 18th century. Built in 1797, the building remained unoccupied until 1858 due to unforeseen circumstances affecting its heirs. The property was eventually acquired by Stephen D. Doar, and it has been home to three generations of the Doar family. Its historical significance is evident in its design, featuring classic columns, a grand portico, and intricate hand railings, all accentuated by the surrounding Spanish moss and vines typical of the region.
The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, an initiative aimed at documenting the architectural heritage of the Southern United States. It was published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys 1938 work, Plantations of the Carolina Low Country. This photograph serves as a valuable record of the architectural legacy and cultural history of South Carolinas plantation era.
