This vintage postcard welcomes travelers to the Antietam Motel, located one mile east of Hagerstown, Maryland, along U.S. Route 40. As one of America's earliest transcontinental highways, Route 40 followed portions of the historic National Road, the country's first federally funded interstate roadway — making Hagerstown a natural stopping point for motorists crossing through western Maryland's Washington County.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the golden age of American travel produced the beloved "linen" postcard, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave these cards their soft, painterly color. This example comes from the Tichnor Brothers of Boston, among the most prolific publishers of the era, and has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to recapture its original warmth and detail.
