Goose Creek SC Episcopal Church Interior, 1719
This vintage photograph captures an interior view of an Episcopal church located in Goose Creek, Berkeley County, South Carolina. The building, completed in 1719, replaced what was likely the oldest church in the region outside of Charleston. Significant structural damage from the 1886 earthquake prompted repairs, with restoration efforts taking place in 1931, preserving its historical integrity.
The image showcases the churchs pulpit, a focal point in the worship space, reflecting the architectural style typical of early 18th-century ecclesiastical structures in the South. This church is a part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, which documents the architectural heritage of the region. The photograph was published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys Plantations of the Carolina Low Country in 1938.
Frances Benjamin Johnston, the photographer, meticulously cataloged various buildings, contributing to the understanding of Southern architecture. This image serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of the area.
