Goose Creek SC Historic House Photo 1686
This vintage photograph captures one of the oldest houses on record in South Carolina, located in Goose Creek, Berkeley County. Built in 1686 by Jan van Arrsens, who led a group of Dutch settlers to the region, the structure showcases distinct Dutch architectural features, including stepped gables. The house has undergone restorations, notably after the devastating earthquake of 1886.
Surrounding the home are lush gardens adorned with Spanish moss and vines, enhancing the historical ambiance of the property. A double oak avenue was planted in 1855, providing a picturesque approach to the residence. This image contributes to the documentation of Southern architecture and landscape, forming part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South.
The photograph is credited to Frances Benjamin Johnston, an influential figure in early American photography. It was published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys 1938 work, Plantations of the Carolina Low Country.
KNOWOLs historic images connect the rich stories and imagery of our past. A statement in any room, each is printed on museum-quality paper using a restored version of the original.
