This vintage photograph captures a Greek Revival mansion located in White Castle, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, built in 1857 by John Andrews. Known for its impressive architecture, the mansion features 75 rooms, adorned with grand columns, parapets, and expansive porticoes. The building was sold to Stone Ware, whose family occupied it until around 1913.
By the time this image was taken, the mansion had fallen into a ruinous condition, showcasing the passage of time and the inevitable decline of even the most majestic structures. The photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a significant documentation project aimed at preserving the architectural heritage of the southern United States.
Documented by Frances Benjamin Johnston, the image serves as a historical reference to the architectural styles and domestic life of the era. The mansion stands as a testament to the rich history of Louisiana and the architectural innovations of the 19th century.
