This vintage photograph, attributed to Frances Benjamin Johnston, showcases a historic structure located in New Orleans, Louisiana, specifically within Orleans Parish. The building, constructed in 1816 by Francois Seignouret, a Bordeaux native known for his work as a wine merchant and furniture maker, reflects the architectural style of its time. The property was acquired in 1870 by Brulatour, also a prominent wine merchant, and has since been an important part of the regions cultural heritage.
The image captures various elements of the garden, including banana plants, urns, and vines, alongside the elegant doors and fanlights that characterize the architecture. These features highlight the integration of nature and design, a hallmark of New Orleans’ unique aesthetic.
This photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South and was acquired from Johnstons estate in 1953. It serves as a valuable piece of the historical narrative of New Orleans, encapsulating the city’s rich architectural and horticultural traditions.
