This restored linen postcard captures the Holiday House Motel along U.S. Route 40 in North East, Maryland, a roadside welcome from the era when the family road trip was becoming an American tradition. Sitting at the head of the Chesapeake Bay in Cecil County, North East took its name from the North East River, and its stretch of Route 40 once served as a busy artery for travelers moving between Baltimore and the cities of the Northeast.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards flourished — printed on textured card stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. We at KNOWOL have carefully restored and color-revived this scene so its vintage warmth shines once more.
