This historic 1884 bird's eye view of Key West has been restored and colorized for the first time by KNOWOL. It was published by J.J. Stoner, a Madison, Wisconsin mapmaker who hand-built city views like this one before airplanes existed, sketching the streets from the ground and redrawing the whole town as if seen from above.
In 1884, Key West was the largest and richest city in Florida, built on a cigar trade that filled the island with more than 100 factories. The map shows the city two years before the fire of 1886 changed it for good. You'll find Fort Taylor, the U.S. Naval Depot, and the Marine Hospital, along with the storefronts that ran daily life: Stillman's Saloon, Greaux Watches, Wellacott's Ice Cream Parlor, and more.
Other landmarks on the map include the Masonic Hall, Odd Fellows Hall, International Telegraph Office, McKillip Boots and Shoes, Sweeny Mineral Water & Beer, Gregory's Cigar Factory, Hanson Blacksmithing, Curry's Saloon and more.
This map has now been restored and colorized by KNOWOL. The new color version was created to make the streets, buildings, waterfront, and landmarks easier to see while keeping the original artwork and historical detail intact.
