This restored linen postcard shows the La Plata Motel along U.S. Route 301 — the old "Tobacco Trail" — a roadside stop sitting 60 miles south of Baltimore, 35 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 15 miles north of the Potomac River Bridge. The town of La Plata is the county seat of Charles County, Maryland, a region long tied to the tobacco trade that gave this stretch of highway its evocative nickname.
From roughly the 1930s into the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and vibrant, saturated color. This card comes from the catalog of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
A charming piece of LaPlata history for any wall, printed on museum-quality archival paper and available in three unframed sizes. Fast, free U.S. shipping. Printed in the USA.
