This vintage map of Long Island, New York was created in 1933 and published by the Billboard Barn of Southampton, Long Island. Drawn by Courtland Smith from data compiled by Richard Foster, this restored colorized edition brings the historic Long Island map to life while preserving the original linework and the villages, railroads, lighthouses, ships, windmills, and pictorial vignettes that crowd its borders.
About This Historic Map
Drawn as a lively pictorial map, this piece presents Long Island in the 1930s, when the area was shaped by its whaling and swordfishing, lighthouses, coastal resorts, the Long Island Rail Road, and colonial history. Across the sheet you can trace the whole island from the Atlantic Ocean shore to Long Island Sound, with Connecticut labeled across the top and ornamental panels framing the scene.
Notable landmarks shown on the map include Montauk Point Light (Built 1797), the Fire Island Light, "Home Sweet Home" in East Hampton (birthplace of John Howard Payne), Jones Beach, Coney Island, Gardiner's Island (where Capt. Kidd buried loot), Sag Harbor, Greenport, Riverhead, Southampton, Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay (burial place of Theodore Roosevelt), Walt Whitman's Birthplace, and The Pine Barrens, along with the many villages and railroad lines that shaped life across the island.
For anyone who summered out east, fished the Great South Bay, or grew up tracing the Long Island Rail Road home, this map is more than a historic view. It captures the windmills and whaling ships, the lighthouses standing watch at Montauk and Fire Island, and the memories that keep families connected to Long Island.
A statement piece for any room, this reproduction is printed using KNOWOL's restored and colorized version of the 1933 Long Island map, preserving the historic character of the original while adding depth, warmth, and visual clarity. It makes a meaningful addition to a beach house, cottage, office, library, den, family room, or local history collection.
