This vintage linen postcard captures the Mayflower Motel, which welcomed travelers five miles south of La Plata, Maryland, along busy U.S. Highway 301 in Faulkner, Charles County. Highway 301 has long served as a key north-south corridor through Southern Maryland, carrying motorists between the Washington area and points south — making roadside stops like this a familiar sight for mid-century drivers.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and richly saturated colors. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose archive lives on today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection.
