This vintage linen postcard advertises the Motel Cavalier, once located along U.S. Route 40, a mile south of Aberdeen, Maryland. Before the interstate era, Route 40 was one of the nation's great east–west highways, carrying travelers between Baltimore and Philadelphia past roadside motels like this one. Aberdeen, in Harford County, is also home to the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground, established in 1917, which made the town a familiar stop for soldiers and travelers alike.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock with bright, saturated colors that gave everyday scenes a cheerful glow. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
