This vintage postcard celebrates the new Elkton High School in Elkton, Maryland, the county seat of Cecil County in the state's northeastern corner. Elkton sits near the head of the Chesapeake Bay along the Elk River, and in the early twentieth century it became widely known as a "marriage capital," drawing couples from across the region thanks to Maryland's lenient marriage laws of the era.
From roughly the 1930s into the 1940s, American travelers mailed home millions of "linen" postcards — named for the textured, fabric-like paper stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This edition comes from the Tichnor Brothers Collection, produced by the noted Boston publisher Tichnor Bros. Inc., and it has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
