About This Historic Map
Drawn from an elevated bird’s-eye perspective, this map presents Tallahassee in the late 19th century, when the city was already established as the state capital of Florida and the county seat of Leon County. The view looks across a hilltop capital surrounded by rolling countryside, farms, groves, lakes, roads, rail lines, and the early neighborhoods that shaped Tallahassee before the modern city grew around them.
Notable landmarks shown on the map include the Capitol, County Court House, University of Florida, State Seminary, Lincoln Academy, University Library, Gallie’s Hall, Masonic and I. O. O. F. Hall, Post Office, F. R. & N. R. R. Depot, Leon Hotel, The Morgan, St. James Hotel, "The Murat Place" residence of Prince Murat, son of the King of Naples, Site of Fort San Luis, The Land of Flowers Office, The Floridian Office, The Economist Office, C. Lewis & Sons Bankers, The Tallahassee Real Estate Exchange, M. Lively Drugs and Medicines, A. Gallie Jr. General Merchandise and Bakery, and other businesses, residences, churches, offices, and landmarks.
Detailed inset illustrations of the Leon Hotel and The Morgan, along with a numbered key identifying the city’s major institutions, merchants, churches, schools, hotels, rail facilities, and prominent residences. Explore the city's past and own a visual record of Tallahassee when it was a compact Southern city surrounded by open land, working farms, groves, and long country roads.
