Women and Children Facing Evacuation San Francisco 1942
On April 25, 1942, five women and children gather on the steps of a home on Bush Street in San Francisco, California. This image documents the impact of Civilian Exclusion Order No. 20, which led to the forced removal of Japanese Americans during World War II. Among them are pregnant women Fusaye Nakamoto and Mrs. Matsumoto, preparing for evacuation to War Relocation Authority centers. Fusaye gave birth to her son Katsumi at Tanforan but suffered a tragic loss at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah. Their husbands had already been incarcerated as enemy aliens. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Japanese American internment experience.
