1850 Structure in Green Mountain, VA - Historical Photograph

This vintage photograph captures a significant structure located in Green Mountain, Albemarle County, Virginia. Built in 1850, the building stands as a testament to the regions architectural history. Prior to its construction, the original house was lost to a fire in 1839. In the years following, a hunting lodge used by the Coles family served as a temporary residence.

The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a project aimed at documenting the diverse architectural styles of the Southern United States. This particular piece is attributed to Frances Benjamin Johnston, a notable photographer recognized for her contributions to early 20th-century photography.

Acquired from Johnstons estate in 1953, the photograph not only serves as a visual record of the buildings historical significance but also highlights the surrounding gardens that enhance its aesthetic appeal.
