1857 Greek Revival Mansion, Iberville Parish, LA
This vintage photograph captures the historic Greek Revival mansion located in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, near White Castle. Built in 1857 by John Andrews, this grand structure originally boasted 75 rooms and intricate architectural details, exemplifying the opulence of its era. The mansions design reflects the craftsmanship of Mason Smith & Co., who contributed to its notable features, including striking columns adorned with Spanish moss.
Over the years, the mansion fell into ruin after being occupied by the Ware family until approximately 1913. The image serves as a window into the past, showcasing the once-magnificent residence, now a poignant reminder of Louisianas architectural heritage. The mansion is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South collection, which documents significant structures across the region.
The photograph, credited to Frances Benjamin Johnston, is a representation of early 20th-century Americana and the story of forgotten places.
