About Adamsville, Alabama

Adamsville is a city of 4,366 people in Jefferson County, about 10 miles northwest of Birmingham. People had settled the area by 1862, but families did not come in large numbers until after the Civil War. In 1889 William Adams gave the Kansas City, Memphis, and Birmingham Railroad land for its tracks and a depot. The railroad made the spot a stop, houses and stores went up along the line, and the town took his name.

A big seam of coal turned up nearby in 1890, and the town boomed. Mines and coke ovens drove its economy, and Adamsville soon had a name as a rough mining town. The legislature incorporated it on February 5, 1901, and the 1910 census counted 649 people.

  • A charter given up in 1915In 1915, during a fight over liquor licenses and worry about the town's lawlessness, residents voted to give up Adamsville's incorporation. An act of August 31, 1915, annulled the charter and dissolved the town government. Adamsville stayed unincorporated until 1953, when it became a city again and put up both a city hall and a fire station within the year.
  • The downtown fire of 1918In 1918 a fire burned much of downtown Adamsville, along with the town's first railroad depot. A new depot went up quickly after the fire and served the town until it was torn down in 1973.
  • A Medal of Honor heroHenry "Red" Erwin, who won the Medal of Honor in World War II, was an Adamsville native and spent his boyhood here.
  • A Christmas parade every DecemberEach year in early December, Adamsville holds its annual Christmas Parade.
