Geography Worth Displaying
This map was created using accurate cartographic data and authoritative geographic sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the Census Bureau. The map brings together terrain, waterways, roads, and building detail. The majority of the streets are labeled, houses are accurately depicted, and the topography is derived from government sources. Combining local data with carefully composed color and shading leads to this beautifully detailed Ai artwork for your wall.
Rather than simply showing street outlines, we’ve included as many of the street names as we could reasonably fit on the map while keeping their names legible. Zoom in on the high resolution preview to see exactly what’s on the map. We truly set out to create a statement piece for anyone who loves Ai. About Ai, Ohio
Ai is a census-designated place of 322 people in Fulton County, Ohio, and it's known for having one of the shortest place names anywhere. The community took shape around 1843, a year after David Springer built its first frame schoolhouse, and a post office opened at Ai in 1846.
During the 1850s the Northern Indiana Air Line railroad was built through the area, but it favored nearby Swanton. Trade moved to Swanton, and fewer people stayed in Ai. The post office held on for decades until it was discontinued in 1903.
- A name with two storiesWhere the name came from has long been argued over in town. Some people say it was taken from Ai, a city in the Bible. Others say it honors Ami Richards, one of the founders, and that people dropped the M from his name to make it sound more masculine.
- First schoolhouse in 1842David Springer built the first frame schoolhouse at Ai in 1842. When its school days were over, the building was moved across the street and remodeled into a home.
- Sunday lessons from Jonathan WoodJonathan Wood started the first Sabbath school at Ai and ran it as superintendent for a number of years, according to the 1905 history of Fulton County.
