About Albany, New York

Albany is the capital of New York and the seat of Albany County, a city of 99,224 people on the west bank of the Hudson River. Mohicans lived here first, and Henry Hudson reached the area in 1609 while sailing for the Dutch East India Company. In 1614 Hendrick Christiaensen put up Fort Nassau, a fur-trading post on Castle Island, and after a flood ruined it in 1618, the Dutch built Fort Orange on the mainland in 1624.

The settlement around the fort became the village of Beverwijck in 1652. When the English captured New Netherland in 1664, they renamed it Albany for Prince James, Duke of Albany, the future King James II. The Dutch took it back briefly in 1673 and called it Willemstadt, but the English returned for good in 1674. Governor Thomas Dongan chartered the city on July 22, 1686, when about 500 people lived there, and in 1797 it became the permanent state capital.

  • The Albany Plan of 1754In 1754 delegates from seven British colonies met in Albany for the Albany Congress, holding their sessions at the Stadt Huys, which served as the city hall. Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania put forward the Albany Plan of Union there, the first formal proposal to join the colonies together. Parliament never adopted it, but it pointed the way toward the United States Constitution.
  • Fulton's steamboat in 1807Robert Fulton started a steamboat line between New York City and Albany in 1807, the first business of its kind to succeed anywhere in the world. By 1810 Albany had 10,763 people and ranked as the nation's tenth-largest urban place.
  • Where the Erie Canal endedThe Erie Canal opened in 1825 and linked the Great Lakes to New York City by water. Its first lock stood north of Colonie Street, and boats emptied into the Albany Basin, a 32-acre man-made lagoon. The basin served as the city's main port until 1932, when the new Port of Albany-Rensselaer took over.
  • The first electric motorIn 1829, while teaching at the Albany Academy, Joseph Henry built the first electric motor. He went on to discover electromagnetic self-induction three years after that, and the unit for it is now called the henry. He later served as the Smithsonian Institution's first Secretary.
  • Home of the New York CentralIn 1853 Erastus Corning, an industrialist who had been Albany's mayor from 1834 to 1837, merged ten railroads between Albany and Buffalo to form the New York Central Railroad. It was run from Albany until 1867, when Cornelius Vanderbilt shifted the headquarters to New York City.
