About Allendale, South Carolina
Allendale is a town of 2,694 people and the county seat of Allendale County. It grew up along the tracks after the Charleston and Western Railroad ran its first train through this area in 1872. The town has gotten smaller in recent decades, falling from 4,052 people in 2000 to 3,482 in 2010 and then to its 2020 count.
- Seat of Allendale CountyAs the county seat, Allendale is home to the Allendale County Courthouse, where the county's government does its business. The courthouse joined the National Register in 2007.
- Jasper Johns's boyhood townThe painter Jasper Johns, born in 1930, spent his childhood in Allendale in the 1930s and 1940s. His grandfather, a farmer, raised him at first. Later he lived with his aunt, who was the only teacher at a two-room school.
- A college since 1965The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie opened in 1965 and is the only college in town. Allendale is also home to WEBA-TV, the PBS station for the part of the Central Savannah River Area that lies in South Carolina.
- Roy C's record businessRoy C (1939-2020) was a soul singer, songwriter and record executive. He owned a record label and a record store in Allendale.
- Tornado emergency in 2022On April 5, 2022, a low-end EF3 tornado tore across the south and southeast side of Allendale. It badly damaged several buildings and injured one person. The National Weather Service office in Charleston declared a tornado emergency for the town, a warning it rarely issues.
