About Alpaugh, California
Alpaugh stands where Atwell's Island once lay, near the southeast end of Tulare Lake. Judge Atwell of Visalia owned the island. The lake later shrank, and the island disappeared. In 1905 Los Angeles investors bought 8,861 acres there and sold small tracts on easy terms. Old residents called the land worthless, yet 212 people came to settle.
Holstein breeder J. M. Henderson once spoke to the Grange at Alpaugh. Afterward he learned the Methodist Church still owed 460 dollars on its mortgage. He offered one of his best young bulls for an auction to raise the money. The bull paid off the church debt.
