About Amherst, Maine
In 1881, Amherst sat on the Union River near the middle of Hancock County. Its good water powers ran saw, clapboard, grain and shingle mills. The town also had a sole-leather tannery. It worked mostly with hides shipped from South America and Mexico.
In 1875 a forest fire started in Amherst and spread to the northwest. It burned over several townships. Near Mattawamkeag, a freight car loaded with sleepers or telegraph poles caught fire. The crew ran it under the water spout at the tank house and put it out.
