This vintage image captures the Anaconda smelter in Anaconda Montana in September 1942. Workers transferred red-hot concentrate known as calcine from roasting to reverberatory smelting furnaces. This critical process eliminated impurities to produce copper and matte. The image is part of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Collection.
