About Angelica, New York

Captain Philip Church named Angelica for his mother, Angelica Schuyler Church. She was the eldest daughter of General Schuyler. Philip's father won the land when Robert Morris failed to pay a debt, and Philip took it over in 1800. He laid out the village like Paris, with streets meeting at a central circle.

Philip Church married Anna Matilda Stewart in Philadelphia. For their honeymoon they traveled by boat, then raft, to Bath, and on horseback to the Genesee River. They built a small whitewashed home called the white house. In 1804 they built their mansion, Belvidere, which still stands beside the Genesee.
