About Annsville, New York
Annsville is a town of 2,639 people in the northwestern corner of Oneida County. In 1791 John and Nicholas Roosevelt bought a 530,000-acre patent from the New York State Land Commission, and in 1793 about 499,000 acres of it went to the Scriba Bank to pay down the brothers' debts, becoming Scriba's Patent. That April, John W. Bloomfield left Burlington, New Jersey, and settled at the place now known as Taberg, where he put up a sawmill and a gristmill.
New England families followed into the northern woods, and the settlement grew for three decades before it had a government of its own. On April 12, 1823, the state carved the town from parts of Lee, Florence, Camden and Vienna and named it for Bloomfield's wife, Ann. Voters gathered for the first town meeting on March 2, 1824, and filled every office from supervisor and town clerk to constables and two poundmasters.
- Settlers from New EnglandFour Morton brothers, Benjamin, Jonathan, James and Abraham, came from Springfield, Massachusetts, in June 1803 to settle the north end of the town. Daniel Miller followed from Granville, Massachusetts, in 1804, and Peter Abbott, a Revolutionary War veteran, arrived from Windham, Vermont, in 1806.
- Lumber, iron and railsThick forests and fast streams made sawmills pay, so besides farming, Annsville turned out lumber and wood products in large amounts. From around 1811 the Oneida Iron and Glass Manufacturing Company made pig iron here. In the 1840s a station opened near Taberg on the Watertown & Rome Railroad, which was later renamed the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg.
- The Blossvale crash of 1907Blossvale, a hamlet close to the town's southern line, took its name from the early Bloss family and once had its own railway station. On the night of April 14, 1907, a freight train pulled by two engines and hauling sixty cars derailed there, and one fireman was killed.
