About Arbuckle, California

Arbuckle is a community of 3,484 people in the southern part of Colusa County, about 20 miles southwest of the county seat at Colusa. Tacitus R. Arbuckle started a ranch on this ground in 1866, and in 1875 he laid out a town on his land, which took his name. To draw settlers, he handed out free town lots to anyone willing to put up a building.

When the railroad was surveyed through the area, Arbuckle donated the right of way, plus ground for a depot and sidings. The rails crossed into Colusa County on May 15, 1876, and ten days later the line reached Arbuckle, where the town held a celebration. A post office opened that year, and Arbuckle himself served as its first postmaster.

  • Almonds since 1892C. H. Locke, a miner from Montana who moved to Arbuckle, noticed that the oaks around town bore immense crops of acorns. He reasoned that land so good for oaks would grow nuts, so in 1892 he put 21 acres into almonds. The trees thrived and bore heavily, and almond orchards and almond hullers still surround the town.
  • Sinking 2.14 feetBetween 2008 and 2017 the ground under Arbuckle dropped 2.14 feet, as water was pumped out of the aquifers and the soil above them collapsed. A California Department of Water Resources report, prepared with 19 local and state agencies, looked at more than 300 sites across the Sacramento Valley and found that no other area had sunk as much.
  • Where three creeks meetSalt Creek runs north past the town, then turns east, where Elk Creek joins it. Together they flow into Sand Creek half a mile northeast of Arbuckle and head northeast. Heavy rains sometimes send Salt Creek over its banks.
