About Au Sable, New York

Au Sable is a town of 3,183 people in the southeastern corner of Clinton County, south of Plattsburgh, with Lake Champlain along its eastern edge and Essex County across its southern line. Settlers began clearing farms here around 1795, and most of them were of English descent.

For more than forty years the area belonged to the town of Peru. In 1839 part of Peru was split off to form Au Sable, which took its name from the river running through it. The town's name is still spelled three ways today: AuSable, Au Sable and Ausable.

  • Named for a sandy riverThe Ausable River runs along the town's border and empties into Lake Champlain at Au Sable Beach. The town took the river's name, which means "of sand."
  • Clintonville, a village in 1825Clintonville sits on Route 9N close to Au Sable's southern line. It was incorporated as a village in 1825, years before Au Sable itself was formed, but it later gave up that status and became a hamlet again.
  • Ausable ChasmOver time the Ausable River cut a deep gorge along the town's southeastern border. Ausable Chasm is now a privately owned tourist attraction, and the hamlet beside it carries the same name.
  • Keeseville across the lineKeeseville, on U.S. Route 9 at Au Sable's southern edge, was once an incorporated village. It reaches across the county line into Chesterfield in Essex County, so part of it lies in each town.
