This vintage photo of a B-26 night intruder pilot was taken in Korea in 1951. Capt. Donald R. DeFoe of Detroit, Michigan, climbs down from his black bomber after his second combat mission, with his goggles pushed up and his oxygen mask still at his mouth.
About This Historic Photo
DeFoe flew with the Fifth Air Force's 3rd Bombardment Wing, which hunted enemy trucks and trains at night on North Korea's supply roads. From August 1951 the wing flew from Kunsan Airfield, on Korea's southwest coast. Its B-26s went out alone, one after another all night long, on flights of about four hours.
KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' scan of the original U.S. Air Force photo (342-FH-4A(29093)). It's printed edge to edge on ultra premium luster photo paper, a popular choice for fine photographic prints.
