About Baron, Oklahoma

Baron is a community of 243 people in Adair County, on U.S. Route 59 about 5 miles south of Westville. It grew up beside the Baron Fork of the Illinois River, and for years local people called the place Barren Fork after that stream. A post office opened here as Baron on November 16, 1895, and it served the community until December 31, 1942.

In 1941 the Federal Writers' Project published its guide to Oklahoma, which counted 150 people in Baron. The town then had a tomato cannery, four stores and a cluster of modest homes. Its sandlot baseball team was known as a strong one.

  • The state's only charcoal kilnTravelers who passed through Baron in 1941 found a kiln that burned wood into charcoal. The state guide published that year said it was believed to be the only kiln of its kind in Oklahoma.
  • A Cherokee fishing placeIn earlier days Baron Creek was a favorite spot for Cherokee fishermen, who sometimes took large catches there. They bruised certain roots and threw them into the creek, and the juice stunned the fish. Then they gathered the fish by hand, speared them with gigs or shot them with arrows.
  • Bait from the postmasterThe 1941 guide praised the fishing in Baron Fork Creek. Anyone planning a trip could write to the Baron postmaster ahead of time, and bait would be ready when they arrived.
