About Bartow, West Virginia

Bartow is a community of 64 people in Pocahontas County, on the East Fork Greenbrier River about 2 miles east of Durbin. It takes its name from Col. Francis S. Bartow, a Confederate commander who was killed on July 21, 1861, at the Battle of First Manassas. Two highways cross the town today, West Virginia Route 92 and U.S. Route 250, and its post office uses ZIP code 24920.

  • Battle of Camp Bartow, 1861Less than three months after Col. Bartow's death, the Civil War reached this valley. On October 3, 1861, the Battle of Greenbrier River was fought about one mile southeast of the present town. It is also known as the Battle of Camp Bartow.
