About Batesville, Mississippi
Batesville is a city of 7,523 people in Panola County, in northwest Mississippi. It grew up in 1855, when the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad (later part of the Illinois Central) came through the county. Before long it swallowed the older town of Panola, a mile away. The new town took its name from the Rev. J. W. Bates, one of its first settlers, and David Butts and John Shuford opened its first stores.
The Methodists put up the town's first church in 1857. By 1880 every one of the county's thirty-one manufacturing shops stood in Batesville, and together they employed seventy men and three children. In 1906 about 800 people lived here, with some 20 business houses, four churches, a public school, a courthouse and a jail.
- One of two county seatsThe old towns of Belmont and Panola carried on a long fight over where the county's courthouse should be. That fight ended with the county split into two judicial districts, and by 1906 Batesville was the seat of the second. Sardis, north of the Tallahatchie River, is the county's other seat.
- The Panolian since 1872E. M. Cage founded The Panolian in 1872 as a weekly Democratic paper and served as both its editor and its owner. In 1906 it was still the town's only newspaper, and by then Batesville also had a bank of its own, the Bank of Batesville, opened in 1897.
- Sawmills, spokes and cotton ginsIn 1906 the Panola Gin & Lumber Co. ran two sawmills and a grist mill in Batesville. The town also had a spoke factory and a gin that pressed cotton into both round and square bales.
