About Battle Creek, Michigan
Battle Creek is a city of 52,721 people in Calhoun County, set where the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers meet. Around 1774 the Potawatomi and Ottawa built a shared village nearby. Once the Potawatomi had been moved to a reservation, permanent settlement began about 1831, as the Erie Canal, finished in 1824, carried families west from New York and New England. Most of them farmed the rich, easy soil of the Goguac prairie, and Isaac Tolland and Dr. Foster, who came a month or two after him, were the first to settle on the city's site.
A post office opened in 1832 with Pollodore Hudson as postmaster, and the first school met in a small log house in 1833 or 1834. Asa Langley and his crew built the first sawmill in 1837, the legislature created the township in 1839, and in 1840 Simon Carr started a brickyard that ran until 1903. The Methodists put up their first church in 1841, on the corner of Marshall and Division streets.
- A fight over food in 1824One local legend traces the name to March 1824, when a federal survey party under Colonel John Mullett met two hungry Potawatomi. The Army was late with supplies promised in the 1821 Treaty of Chicago, so they came asking for food. After a long argument the two reportedly tried to take some, and a surveyor shot and badly wounded one. The surveyors retreated to Detroit, and settlers called the stream Battle Creek River, which named the town.
- A stop toward freedomBefore the Civil War, Battle Creek was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, where people escaping slavery passed through on their way to freedom in Michigan and Canada. The abolitionist Sojourner Truth, who had escaped slavery herself, chose to make her home here.
- An Adventist center from 1863Battle Creek was central to the early Seventh-day Adventist Church, which held its founding convention here in 1863. The denomination built its first hospital, its first college and its first publishing office in the city. After the hospital and the publishing office burned in 1902, the church chose to spread out, and most of its institutions left town. Its first church here, rebuilt in the 1920s, still holds services.
- The Cereal CityW. K. Kellogg worked for his brother, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. In its laboratory he spilled liquid cornmeal on a heater, which cooked it into flakes. He tried them with milk, and sanitarium patients wanted so many that he left to build a factory with investors to make corn flakes. C. W. Post followed with Grape-Nuts and his own cereal company. The W.K. Kellogg House joined the National Register in 1985.
