About Bay Hill, Florida
Bay Hill is a community of 5,021 people in southwest Orange County, on both sides of Apopka-Vineland Road between Windermere and Lake Buena Vista. Its golf club opened in 1961 with two nine-hole courses, the Champion and the Challenger, both designed by Dick Wilson.
Arnold Palmer leased the club for five years beginning in 1970, with an option to buy it. He took full ownership in 1975 and began reworking the course to suit his own ideas.
“In 1965, Palmer visited Bay Hill to play in and win a charity golf tournament. As the story goes, Palmer went home directly after and told his wife Winnie he wanted to buy the course.”
- A world first in 1961When the Champion and Challenger courses opened in 1961, they were planted with Tifway Bermudagrass. No other golf course in the world had used that grass before Bay Hill.
- Palmer's tournament since 1979In 1979 the Florida Citrus Open left Rio Pinar Country Club and came to Bay Hill. The Champion and Challenger nines were joined to form the 18 holes for that year's Bay Hill Citrus Classic. The club has held the event every year since, and it is now called the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.
