About Belfry, Montana

Belfry began in 1905 with the building of the Yellowstone Park Railroad. The town took its name from Dr. Oran Merton Belfry, who had invested in the railroad. Belfry served as the line's headquarters. As demand for coal fell, the railroad went bankrupt in 1954. In 2012 the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1906 a man named Higham settled here and organized the Bank of Belfry. He started it with two partners from Red Lodge. Higham was cashier from the start and managed the bank himself.
