This vintage photograph captures Bella Mina, a historic residence located in Limestone County, Alabama. Built in 1826 by Governor Bradley Bibb, the two-story brick structure showcases six Doric columns gracing its front, reflecting the architectural style of the early 19th century. At the time the photo was taken, the house was noted to be in fair condition, while the slave quarters were reported to be in poor repair.

During the Civil War, Bella Mina served as a temporary occupation site for Federal troops, adding to its historical significance. The residence is an example of the rich architectural heritage found in Alabama, particularly as documented by the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South.

Frances Benjamin Johnston, the photographer, was known for her comprehensive documentation of early American architecture. This image is a valuable piece of history that connects viewers to the past and highlights the intricate stories of prominent structures like Bella Mina.

KNOWOLs historic images connect the rich stories and imagery of our past. A statement in any room, each is printed on museum-quality paper using a restored version of the original.
