About Bendena, Kansas
Bendena is a community of 117 people in Doniphan County, Kansas, along highway K-20. Troy, the county seat, is 7 miles to the northeast, and Atchison is 15 miles to the south.
The town was founded in 1886 and for its first years carried the name Albers, honoring John Albers, a pioneer who farmed the land where it grew. The Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska railroad kept a station here, with its own telegraph operator.
- Named for a sweetheartThe name Albers lasted only until the post office came. When it opened in January 1888, postal officials asked for a new name because Albers was too much like other town names in Kansas. The town became Bendena, after the young woman courted by the man who first worked the telegraph key at the railroad station.
- A school on benches in 1861Years before the town was founded, Miss Strode taught one of Doniphan County's early schools on the ground where Bendena now stands. Her classroom had no desks or chairs, only rough benches fastened to the walls.
