About Bennington, Michigan
Bennington is a township of 3,119 people in Shiawassee County, and it holds the center of population of Michigan. Samuel Nichols, Israel Parsons and Benjamin Powers bought the first government land here in 1835, and Nichols became the first to settle. The township was organized on March 6, 1838, and took the name of Bennington, Vermont, where its first settlers had lived.
At first the new township also covered the land that later became Perry, and Lemuel Castle served as its first supervisor. A state act on March 15, 1841, made Perry a township of its own. Bennington village got a post office on December 13, 1848, with Benjamin Davis as postmaster, and a rail station later opened there. The village office stayed open until February 28, 1958.
- The Hartwells of HartwellvilleGiles Tucker opened the township's first store at a spot called Hartwellville. Johnathon M. Hartwell, who came from Norwich, New York, took it over in 1838, and on February 11, 1841, he became the first postmaster of the Hartwell post office. His family held that job until the office closed on January 15, 1901, and Hartwellville was later abandoned.
- Pittsburg and lost AltonPittsburg, a community in the south of the township, is named for Moses Pitts, who first owned its town site. By 1878 a hamlet called Alton also stood on the Grand River Trail, lying west of Morrice Road by 8/10 of a mile. Its people eventually left, and Alton became a ghost town.
- Methodists since about 1869The First Methodist Episcopal church in Bennington village was organized about 1869, according to the county history published in 1907.
