About Benton, New Hampshire
The town was granted in 1764 and first named Coventry. Many settlers came from Coventry, Connecticut. In 1840 Governor Isaac Hill suggested a new name. It became Benton, honoring Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator who pushed for westward expansion.
In 1860 a stone hotel called the Prospect House was built atop Mount Moosilauke. Later named the Tip Top House, it was enlarged after a carriage road reached the summit. Dartmouth College received it in 1920, and it burned in 1942.
