About Berwyn, Illinois

Berwyn is a Cook County city whose neighborhoods grew from separate nineteenth-century settlements beside rail lines and older travel routes. Chartered in 1908, it developed its central area during a rapid building period in the 1920s. Its brick bungalows, civic landmarks, parks, commercial corridors, and three Metra stations reflect this history, while the 2020 census recorded 57,250 residents.

  • Origins Near the TracksIn 1890, attorneys Charles E. Piper and Wilbur J. Andrews acquired 106 acres for development near the railroad.
  • A City Since 1908Berwyn was chartered as a city in 1908, when Berwyn Township also separated from Cicero Township.
  • Brick Bungalow LegacyStrict building standards helped create extensive blocks of brick bungalows, often ornamented with stained glass, clay tiles, terra cotta, and detailed masonry.
  • The Picnic MuralRichard Haines painted The Picnic in 1942 for Berwyn's post office as part of a federal Treasury Department arts program.
