About Bessemer City, North Carolina
From the North Carolina Gazetteer: "Bessemer City town in W Gaston County. Inc. 1893. Named for Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-98), discoverer of process for making steel from cast iron. Iron ore had been found in the vicinity, and there were hopes that steel mills might be est. there."
From the City of Bessemer City: "Mr. Ormand established the Ormand Mining Company, and that company helped in the establishment of Bessemer City. The Old Ormand Furnace is the oldest stack of its kind in America."
